Surfing in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a genuinely excellent surf destination — and one of the world's most underrated. The island has two distinct surf seasons on opposite coasts, which means there is always a working surf break somewhere in the country throughout the year. The south and west coasts fire from November to April (peak January–March); the east coast comes alive from May to October (peak July–September). Water temperature is a constant 27–30°C year-round — no wetsuit required. From the world-class point break at Arugam Bay to the gentle beginner beach break at Weligama, Sri Lanka has waves for every level.

Best Surf Spots in Sri Lanka

Arugam Bay — The Legend

A-Bay Point is Asia's most famous right-hander — a long, peeling wave over a sand-covered reef that can produce rides of 200+ metres on a good day. Best for intermediate to advanced surfers. Peak season June–September; the wave can reach 2–3 metres in July–August. The consistent right-hand shape rewards regular surfing over a week or more. The surrounding village is excellent — cheap, laid-back, full of international surfers.

Weligama — The Beginner's Paradise

The wide, sheltered bay at Weligama produces a gentle, forgiving beach break that is ideal for first-timers. Surf schools line the beach offering lessons from USD 20–30 for two hours including board. Most beginners stand up within their first session. The wave is consistent throughout the south coast season (November–April). No reef hazard — the sandy bottom is forgiving.

Hikkaduwa

A popular reef break on the south coast with multiple peaks — best for intermediate surfers. The reef can be shallow at low tide. Good infrastructure including board rental, repair shops and surf schools. Best November–March.

Midigama

A local favourite between Weligama and Hikkaduwa — a sharp reef break that produces punchy, hollow waves on its day. Less crowded than Hikkaduwa. Best for experienced surfers due to the shallow reef. The small beach has a handful of surf guesthouses. November–April.

Hiriketiya

Possibly the most photogenic surf spot in Sri Lanka — a perfectly bowl-shaped bay south of Dickwella with a fun left and right break working best in the smaller swell. Best November–March. Very popular with intermediate surfers and Instagram photographers. Accommodation on the beach is limited — book ahead.

What to Bring

Boards are rentable everywhere (LKR 800–1,200/day for a longboard or softboard). Bring reef shoes if surfing reef breaks (Hikkaduwa, Midigama). Reef rash guard recommended. Leash is usually provided with rental boards. Sunscreen is essential — the tropical sun reflects off the water and burns quickly. Most surfers use SPF 50 and reapply every hour in the water.
