Airport transit town

Negombo is the most common first stop in Sri Lanka, and with good reason — it sits just 7km from Bandaranaike International Airport, making it the obvious choice for a first or last night before a long-haul flight. But Negombo is more than just a transit town. The old Dutch canal, one of Sri Lanka's largest fish markets, a fascinating Catholic fishing community, and a string of beach hotels north of town give it a character that rewards a genuine day or two of exploration.

What to See & Do in Negombo

The Fish Market

Negombo has one of Sri Lanka's largest and most active fish markets — a sprawling covered hall beside the lagoon where boats bring in enormous hauls of reef fish, squid, prawns and crab before dawn. The best time to visit is 6–7am when the catch is being unloaded and the atmosphere is at its most electric. The air is pungent, the colours vivid (red snappers, silver mackerel, black-spotted eels) and the activity relentless. It is one of the most authentic experiences in Sri Lanka and almost entirely un-touristic.

Hamilton Canal & Lagoon

The Dutch built a canal system across the lagoon in the 17th century — the Hamilton Canal stretches 120km south from Negombo towards Colombo. Canoe and boat trips on the lagoon and canal offer a peaceful look at local life: fishing villages, mangroves, water birds, and the occasional crocodile in the shallower sections. Several guesthouses and tour operators in Negombo arrange half-day lagoon trips.

St Mary's Church

Negombo has a large and historically Catholic fishing community — Portuguese missionaries converted the fishing villages here in the 16th century and the faith has remained strong ever since. St Mary's Church (in the town centre) is a beautiful baroque-influenced white church with a richly decorated interior that reflects this deep Catholic heritage. Religious festivals here, particularly Easter, are celebrated with extraordinary devotion.

The Beach

The beach strip north of Negombo town (along Lewis Place and beyond) is the main tourist area — a long stretch of hotels, guesthouses and restaurants facing west across the Indian Ocean. The beach itself is pleasant rather than spectacular — the sand is grey-brown and the sea can be rough — but the sunsets over the water are beautiful, and the beach strip has a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere. Kitesurfing is popular in the lagoon.
