Sri Lanka: 2-Week Itinerary

Two weeks is the ideal amount of time for a first Sri Lanka trip — enough to cover the essential highlights at a comfortable pace without feeling rushed, and enough to include both a Yala safari and the south coast beaches alongside the Cultural Triangle and Hill Country. This is the most comprehensive single-loop itinerary possible in 14 days.

Days 1–2: Colombo and Negombo

Arrive at BIA into Negombo — the beach town 7km from the airport is a logical first night. Morning of Day 2: explore Negombo's Dutch canal, fish market and St Mary's Church before driving to the Cultural Triangle (3 hours). Alternatively, skip Negombo and push straight to Sigiriya.

Days 3–4: Cultural Triangle — Sigiriya and Dambulla

Two full days based near Sigiriya. Day 3: Sigiriya Rock Fortress (early morning) and Dambulla Cave Temple (afternoon). Day 4: morning wildlife safari at Minneriya (elephant gathering July–October) or a village cycle tour. Afternoon: relax at your guesthouse.

Day 5: Anuradhapura

Drive to Anuradhapura (1.5 hours) — a full day in the sacred ancient city. The Sri Maha Bodhi, Ruwanwelisaya Dagoba, Jetavanaramaya, and Thuparamaya are all within cycling distance. Hire a bicycle at the entrance. Transfer to Kandy (3 hours) via Dambulla.

Days 6–7: Kandy

Two days in Kandy. Day 6: Temple of the Tooth (9:30am puja), Kandy Lake, city market, Kandyan cultural show. Day 7: Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, a half-day tea plantation tour to Labookellie or the Ramboda Falls area, and an evening rickshaw around the lake.

Day 8: Kandy to Ella — The Highland Train

The centrepiece of any Sri Lanka trip. Board the morning train from Kandy (≈8:30am) for the 7-hour journey to Ella. Book observation class seats months in advance via 12Go Asia. Arrive Ella at dusk. See our train rides guide.

Days 9–10: Ella

Two full days in Ella. Day 9: early Ella Rock hike (6:30am start), afternoon rest, sunset at Little Adam's Peak. Day 10: visit the Nine Arch Bridge (photograph the morning train crossing), walk through tea estates, optional Horton Plains day trip (45 minutes from Ella by tuk-tuk — World's End and Baker's Falls).

Days 11–12: Yala National Park

Drive from Ella to Yala National Park (2.5 hours). Two morning safaris in Block 1 give excellent odds of multiple leopard sightings, plus elephant, crocodile and an exceptional variety of birds. See our safari guide. Base yourself in Tissamaharama or at a lodge near the park gates.

Day 13: Galle

Drive from Yala along the south coast highway to Galle (2.5 hours). Spend the afternoon walking the 17th-century Dutch ramparts of Galle Fort, exploring the atmospheric Church Street, and wandering into galleries and boutiques within the fort walls. Stay within the fort for the full experience.

Day 14: South Coast Beach and Mirissa

Last full day — choose between Unawatuna (closest to Galle, calm bay, good snorkelling), Mirissa (the most beautiful crescent bay, best whale-watching base November–April), or Weligama (surf lessons). If visiting November–April, a dawn whale-watching boat from Mirissa is a magnificent way to spend a last morning. Return to Colombo (2.5 hours) for an evening flight.
